Ingredients
  

  • 12 ounces Italian-style chicken or beef sausage
  • large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 ounces penne pasta
  • 1.5 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1 can (20 to 24 ounces) whole tomatoes, crushed
  • 1 can (10 to 12 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1.5 cups tomato pasta sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.75 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions
 

  • Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook penne until just tender, then drain and set aside.
  • In a large pot, cook sausage with onion and garlic over medium heat until browned.
  • Add chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, pasta sauce, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes, then simmer.
  • Pour in cream, add butter, mozzarella, and Parmesan, stirring until melted and creamy.
  • Simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and stir in remaining mozzarella.
  • Add cooked pasta, stir well, and serve hot.

Notes

Adjust spice by adding more or less red pepper flakes. Add spinach at the end for extra freshness. Reheat with a splash of milk or broth to maintain creaminess.
