Ingredients

Egg Mixture

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cooked, crumbled breakfast sausage can substitute ham or bacon

Bread Base

  • 4 slices day-old bread cubed
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted

Instructions

Cooking Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard powder, salt, and pepper until combined.
  • Stir in the shredded cheese and cooked sausage.
  • Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak the bread.
  • Sprinkle any remaining cheese or sausage on top if desired.
  • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

Use slightly stale or day-old bread for the best texture in the casserole. To make this ahead, assemble the casserole completely, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 12 hours. Add 5 to 10 minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
